Through basic Salsa steps, body isolation, turns, and playful interaction, participants quickly got to know each other. During the class, situations were also simulated to practice setting boundaries and confidently saying “no” — skills that are deeply relevant within everyday BJJ practice and beyond. Many participants shared how seen, safe, and empowered they had felt during the camp. Calypso reminded everyone to listen seriously to their own feelings and intuition — that if something consistently hurts emotionally within a training environment, then something may be wrong and should not simply be accepted as normal. During the seminar, Charlotte von Baumgarten taught a series of highly effective techniques while placing a strong emphasis on detail, precision, and conceptual understanding. What began as a simple idea quickly showed how much demand there is for accessible and community-oriented FLINTA* training spaces in Berlin. This Open Mat was facilitated by Julia, who trains at Ringside Gym and has been highly enthusiastic about the BeyondMattrix initiative from the very beginning. Her openness and positive energy helped create a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere where participants could train, exchange techniques, and connect with one another. BeyondMattrix main coach Charlotte von Baumgarten also joined the training session and rolled with participants throughout the Open Mat. Together, the group trained both Gi and NoGi, sharing rounds, technical discussions, and experiences from different gyms and backgrounds. Although Ringside Gym is located on the outskirts of Berlin, more than 30 FLINTA* practitioners made their way to the event — something that strongly reflects the growing need for community-centered training spaces.
