BeyondMattrix: Founded in 2025 through Community Open Mats

First Open Mat 14.09.2025

In September 2025, BeyondMattrix hosted its very first FLINTA*-only Open Mat in Berlin — and approximately 30 participants joined us on the mats for an afternoon of training, exchange, and community building at Fightzone.

Throughout the session, participants rolled both NoGi and Gi, creating a welcoming and dynamic environment for practitioners of different backgrounds and experience levels. The atmosphere was open, supportive, and full of positive energy, reflecting the values at the core of BeyondMattrix.

The Open Mat was guided by BeyondMattrix’s main coach Charlotte von Baumgarten, whose experience, encouragement, and leadership helped create a space where FLINTA* practitioners could train freely, connect with one another, and grow in confidence on the mats.

After training, many participants continued the afternoon together over pizza, sharing experiences and conversations about FLINTA* perspectives in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. These discussions highlighted how important it is to create spaces where people can not only train together, but also openly exchange ideas, challenges, and experiences within the sport.

What began as a simple idea quickly showed how much demand there is for accessible and community-oriented FLINTA* training spaces in Berlin. We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated, supported the event, and helped shape the atmosphere of mutual respect and empowerment.

BeyondMattrix will continue organizing free Open Mats, seminars, workshops, and future camps in order to strengthen the FLINTA* BJJ community and create more opportunities to train together in a safe and motivating environment.

Second Open Mat 09.11.2025

The second BeyondMattrix FLINTA*-only Open Mat took place at Ringside Gym and brought together more than 30 participants from across Berlin’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.

This Open Mat was facilitated by Julia, who trains at Ringside Gym and has been highly enthusiastic about the BeyondMattrix initiative from the very beginning. Her openness and positive energy helped create a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere where participants could train, exchange techniques, and connect with one another.

BeyondMattrix main coach Charlotte von Baumgarten also joined the training session and rolled with participants throughout the Open Mat. Together, the group trained both Gi and NoGi, sharing rounds, technical discussions, and experiences from different gyms and backgrounds.

Although Ringside Gym is located on the outskirts of Berlin, more than 30 FLINTA* practitioners made their way to the event — something that strongly reflects the growing need for community-centered training spaces. With each Open Mat, familiar faces return and new people join, and we are slowly beginning to build meaningful connections and get to know one another beyond our individual academies.

It has also been especially encouraging to see complete beginners join the Open Mats in order to get a first impression of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Many participants have shared that they feel more comfortable taking their first steps into the sport within the safer and more supportive environment of FLINTA*-only events. Creating spaces where people can explore BJJ without pressure or intimidation continues to be one of the central goals of BeyondMattrix.

The atmosphere throughout the event was warm, supportive, and energetic, showing once again how valuable FLINTA*-focused spaces can be within Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

BeyondMattrix is deeply grateful to Julia and to Ringside Gym for supporting the initiative and helping create more accessible opportunities for FLINTA* people to train together in Berlin.
