Who We Are

BeyondMattrix is a community and initiative dedicated to making Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) more inclusive, supportive, and empowering for Women*/FLINTA* practitioners and other underrepresented groups. We believe that martial arts are not just about physical skill—they are about connection, teamwork, confidence, and mutual respect.

Our mission is to challenge outdated norms, break down barriers, and create safer spaces on the mats. We offer guidance, workshops, weekend camps in Berlin, and free Open Mats at rotating gyms across the city, designed to:

  • Normalize taking up space and rewrite narratives in Jiu Jitsu

  • Support FLINTA* practitioners in building confidence and skill

  • Highlight skill, technique, strategy, and mental strength over physical dominance or appearance

  • Encourage fair access to training and inclusive gym culture

  • Address sexism, gatekeeping, and unequal standards that persist in BJJ

We invite coaches, gym owners, and practitioners to reflect on power dynamics, hierarchies, and social norms, and to actively contribute to an environment where everyone can train, learn, and grow safely.

At BeyondMattrix, we see BJJ as a tool for personal empowerment, community building, and feminist action—on and off the mats.

Meet the Team

Calypso, founder and manager of BeyondMattrix, often found herself as the only woman in training, lacking suitable training partners and opportunities to grow at the same pace as her male teammates. She has experienced different forms of harassment on and off the mats, which motivated her to create spaces where Women*/FLINTA* can thrive, stick to the sport, and grow into confident practitioners.

Through BJJ, Calypso has learned to set boundaries, trust herself, and realize the immense mental and physical strength of herself/women*. She has a deep love for art and movement—spending 10 years breakdancing and passionately dancing Cuban Salsa since 2015. In 2025, she earned her purple belt in BJJ, blending movement, creativity, and community.

Calypso has strong experience teaching languages and dance to adults and children, and she serves as the facilitator and communicator of all events. She is approachable for all questions and needs, and is committed to strengthening the FLINTA* BJJ community while promoting visibility for Women*/FLINTA* in BJJ through social media. She teaches in German, Spanish, French, English, and Italian.

Charlotte is the main coach at BeyondMattrix. She entered combat sports as a teenager and has never stopped training. She earned her black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2017 under Ulf Ehlert and has taught at Ringside Gym, BJJ Akademie, Fight Zone in Berlin, and Mathias Ribeiro’s academy in Madrid.

A dedicated and detail-oriented teacher, Charlotte is deeply committed to refining her students’ games and supporting their growth on the mats. Teaching since 2011, and with outstanding success at international competitions, Charlotte has long been a role model for women*. Her top achievements include IBJJF European gold at every belt level, silver at the 2019 IBJJF World Championship, and No-Gi World Championship gold as a brown belt, all in the adult division. She teaches BJJ in German, English, and Spanish.

Together, Charlotte and Calypso guide BeyondMattrix’s camps, workshops, and free rotating Open Mats, combining technical mastery, creativity, and empowerment to make BJJ a more inclusive, equitable, and safer space for everyone.
