Summer 2026: Four Open Mats, One Growing Community across Berlin
This summer, we hosted four BeyondMattrix Open Mats across Berlin — and looking back, it’s amazing to see how much our community has grown.
We started on 31 May at Biwa Jiu Jitsu, bringing Women*/FLINTA* grapplers together for an afternoon of training, connection and meeting new people.
FENRIZ Open Mat
On 27 June, we headed to Fenriz, Berlin’s biggest BJJ gym. With temperatures reaching around 40°C, it was definitely one of our hottest Open Mats yet! Most people trained No-Gi, and we were joined by Charlotte von Baumgarten, which made the day extra special. We also had three complete beginners step onto the mats for the first time — always one of my favourite things to see.
On 12 July, we met at DOJO in Bergmannstraße, where we had another really strong turnout. Slowly but surely, we’re building a group of regulars who keep coming back and mark our Open Mats in their calendars. Seeing this consistent community take shape has been incredibly rewarding.
And finally, on August 30 at Fightzone, we celebrated our 10th BeyondMattrix Open Mat and our first anniversary! 🥳 The event was held in collaboration with SheGuard and Hera, two martial arts initiatives for women that have recently started their work and are creating even more opportunities for women to get involved in martial arts.
For this special edition, I also taught an introduction to BJJ for complete beginners, with eight women trying Jiu Jitsu for the very first time. I prepared lots of games to give everyone a playful introduction to the BJJ game — exploring different positions, learning how to move and, most importantly, laughing and having fun while discovering all the funny positions Jiu Jitsu can put you in.
From our first Open Mats to our 10th, it feels like we’re creating something really special: a community where people can come together, train, learn, and feel welcome on the mats.
